What does interreligious dialogue look like from different religious perspectives? it do? One way of answering these questions is by examining historical examples “religious dialogue”. These illustrate first-hand the rhetoric dialogue. This article examines three case studies: (1) 2nd-century Rome, Justin Martyr’s Dialogue with Trypho; (2) 12th-century Spain, Kuzari Judah Halevi Jew alongside Dialogus Petrus Alfonsi, a Christian convert Judaism (both discuss Islam); (3) 18th-century Berlin, Moses Mendelssohn’s Jerusalem and Johann Caspar Lavater’s Nathanael. Each contextualized case-study reveals creative, morally enigmatic tension between commitment to hearing Other, utility Other for demarcating one’s own identity, epistemological contradictions systems. Borrowing Martin Buber’s insight that Ich (the “I”) needs Du (a “you”) form itself but must transform into third person es (an “it”), this shows how complicated process co-production through is—one which both problematic ethically promising. Here, literary dialogues establish general feature dialogue: requirements self-construction, not just need peaceful coexistence, recommend adoption strong dialogical tolerance.
